How Is The State of Your House?

How Is The State of Your House?

If you think about it, it’s really kinda funny how when you grow up & move out into your own house, how excited you get about having house guests. You want to cook out, and have people over for dinner, show the place off- I mean, it really is kinda funny how we like to do that, if you think about it. I mean, ‘cause, I don’t know about y’all, but when I was a kid, I used to HATE it when company was coming over to the house.

First of all, it was like some unseen force had reached out, and flipped on my mom’s crazy switch.

Secondly, I knew I was going to have to do one of the things I dreaded the most: CLEAN MY ROOM. And I don’t just mean clean, we’re talking military-grade-inspection, clean.

My being ADHD didn’t help anything either- because I had to test everything out… Ya know, read every book or paper I touched, make sure the batteries worked in all of my toys..

I also had this handmade toy box that was as big & wide as I was tall, and just as long. That is not an exaggeration either folks, I think at one time, me and about four of my cousins, crammed ourselves inside of that thing during a game of hide and seek. So yeah, it was pretty huger, and somehow, some way, my favorite toy ALWAYS wound up at the bottom, so when it came time to cleaning it all up,  testing out each and every toy, gizmo, and trinket was QUITE A CHORE.

This didn’t really do anything to help my mother’s mood. Of course, I didn’t really see the point. .. These guests weren’t going to be coming into MY ROOM anyway, and if they had kids, I knew EXACTLY how this was gonna go down.. We would spend about a good ten whole minutes meticulously undoing my hours of hard work to get to all of the best toys at the bottom of the toy box, so what was the point?

Yeah… As an adult, I think I pretty much figured out how they always wound up down there in no-mans land. I’m pretty sure those were always the ones I was “battery-checking,” right about the time when my mom lost her cool. Of course, I was never in a hurry. I knew two things for sure: 1.) It was all going to wind up right back in the floor, scattered all over the place anyway, and 2.)  As soon as my room was clean, I had to help clean the REST OF THE HOUSE.

Looking back, I think I may have been part of the unseen force messing with mom’s “crazy switch”.

How many of you can relate? I know none of you were like that when you were kids, or have kids like that at home.. How many of you flip a switch like my mom, & run around like crazy to prepare your house for special visitors?

Ya know what I mean- unclutter the coffee tables, actually put all the shoes in the closet… I don’t know, clean off the kitchen table like all you ever do is eat there and make sure there is no evidence of that having ever happened any time soon- ya know, straighten up the couch pillows; fluff them just right, adjust the magazines so they are lined up, and place the remote controls just so.. (I see you- I know you do that)

But why? Do we think the people who come through our doors don’t know we went all manic, must-make-my-house-like-a-museum-mode? Do we honestly believe they are convinced our house smells like Mr. Clean, Pinesol, & Febreeze 24/7? I know… Some of you out there (I see you ma’am) are thinking, “my home is always perfectly clean like that, and ready for guests,” and if that is you, GOD BLESS YOU! Also, catch me before you leave, I need to know the name of your magic pill. You run a tight ship.. That’s good. Mom’s crazy switch rubbed off on you differently than some of the rest of us..

But what about when guests drop by unannounced, or with short notice? Oh boy.. Mom sure did fuss then. I mean, All the things she hadn’t noticed for DAYS.. weeks.. maybe even months, suddenly started growing ten feet tall, and waving at her from every nook, cranny, corner, countertop, tabletop, crevice, we’re talking every in-between and underneath space. Dust bunnies started growing fangs & started attacking from their once quiet, unobtrusive, cozies- all while mom fusses about, offering drinks & making small talk, while trying to discreetly remove all visible evidence of human life. Gotta love mom.

Like it or not, mom rubbed off on us. We all have a bit of that “Someone is coming, time to sanitize,” in us.

I can only imagine how mom (or any of us) would react if we got the call that Jesus were coming, or better yet, if there was a knock at the door; when you answer, standing right there, smiling, was Jesus himself. How would your house hold up in the grand scheme of things? Would you be prepared to invite Him inside?

Open your Bible with me to the book of Revelation, chapter 3, and let’s start with the  17th verse:

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.Revelation 3:17-20

Now, let’s jump up to verse 3-

Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Revelation 3:3

Now flip over to the 16th chapter, verse 15-

Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.Revelation 16:15

Hmm.. A thief: Does a thief give notice? He doesn’t ring the doorbell, or call ahead. That would be nice, wouldn’t it [pick up phone] Hello? Oh? Ok, thank you for letting me know. [dial phone] “Hello, 911?” NO! A THIEF is going to catch you UNAWARE- off guard, when you LEAST expect him! “I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee”

Ok, look with me, in your Bible, if you will, at I Thessalonians 5:2-6

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.  I Thesselonians 5:2-6

Before you set your Bible back down, let’s take a peek at Luke 12:2-3

2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.Luke 12:2-3

My FRIENDS!!! God cannot be fooled! He already called ahead [hold up Bible] He let us know in advance he would be paying us a visit- we have been given our advance notice of an IMPORTANT GUEST, the most important guest! Your “crazy switch,” should ALREADY BE FLIPPED folks! It needs to be STUCK in on-mode! You can’t flip your switch after Saturday night to prepare for Sunday morning’s “special visit.”

Look around you: Go ahead, look at your neighbor- (you can smile, it’s ok), You can fool your neighbor if you live your life that way; you can fool your neighbor there, can fool the church, but brothers & sisters, you CAN NOT FOOL GOD! You CAN NOT rush around at the last minute to get your house in order & think Jesus doesn’t know! Jesus can smell the Pinesol! Come on, The ANCIENT OF DAYS, who knows all things, and all things, sees?!? He knows about every dust bunny, every match box car under your bed & every piece of dirty laundry stuffed in your closet.

Open your Bibles to II Peter 3:9-15

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation

Everyone please… Close your eyes with me. I want you to imagine something.. Go ahead, just relax, and allow your imagination to drift, everyone with their eyes closed- I want you to imagine… YOUR SELF… and it’s 10:30 pm on a Saturday night. You just got paid yesterday, and you are all caught up on your bills- and there is a nice chunk of change left over.. mad money.. you can do whatever you want; Saturday night, no bills, extra spending money, no work in the morning, and no kids if you don’t want em, cause you had an offer to watch the kids, and guess what- your back.. it usually hurts, but you’re feeling PRETTY good…. Very good, actually, and you are in a GREAT mood. You could be anywhere right now, doing anything. NOT A CARE IN THE WORLD… Go ahead and imagine it with me- allow yourself to imagine it. [make LOUD noise with the microphone]

Just Like that[snap] Beloved. Where were you? What were you doing? How was the state of your house?

‘Cause just like that, Jesus came back when you least expected Him. He came back seeking His faithful servants, those who would wait for Him, and watch for Him- How did He find you?

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation II Peter 3:9-15

You know… not all of us had a crazy mom that taught us how to get our house in order for the arrival of a special guest. You may be sitting there wondering, right now, “How can I MAKE SURE my house is in ORDER when the Lord comes?”

While here on Earth, our Lord gave us three important commissions- and they are recorded in the gospel; The first can be found in the Book of Luke- “Love the Lord, your God with all your heart, & Love your neighbor as yourself.”

The other two can be found in the Gospel of Matthew-

Matthew 10:6-8

6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

And Matthew 25:35-40

Matthew 25:35-40

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

I don’t know about yall, but I think when Christ returns, I would like him to catch me doing one of those things..
